Intro to Elliott Smith
RIP Elliott. You left us too soon, but your music lives on. Anyone looking for great music, listen to a few songs I posted. His death was bizzare read and tell me, what do you think really happened?
For My Fellow Elliott Smith Fans
If you know Elliott Smith, even one song or many… you will know that he was a genius at writing and recording music. His solo career was a success (in my opinion). He had a presence about him, people close to Elliott and others who witnessed him live and sitting on a stool holding only an acoustic guitar and his voice. Coupled with the powerful, thought provoking, political, sad and amazing beautifully crafted music. It was said that when Elliott played; no matter where, that he could make a large or small venue so quiet you could hear a pin drop; yes, these entire rooms with just a few strums of his guitar and his painfully beautiful voice… People knew that Elliott was so special and more and more people wanted to hear him play. Sometimes his words would almost tremble as they were so raw, real and close to the heart. Elliotts passion became many people’s fascination with this new guy on the block! It is true that Gus Van Sant heard Elliott’s music and he was so impressed that he invited Elliott to his house to watch a movie. This movie would end up being Good Will Hunting. Gus asked Elliott if he would write a song for his movie and also if he could use Elliott’s songs in his movie.
(If you’ve seen Good Will Hunting then you have heard Elliott Smith) Elliott was nominated for a grammy after Good Will Hunting came out! His nomination was for the song ‘Miss Misery’, which he specifically wrote for Gus Van Sant’s Good Will Hunting movie.
All dressed in white, Elliott walked the red carpet and performed Miss Misery to an audience who didn’t really know who Elliott was. Needless to say, the world was taken aback after hearing his song and seeing his humble, timid demeanour as he sang from his soul. Unfortunately Elliott did not win, he lost to Celine Dion… big surprise there, as ‘My Heart Will Go On’ was the theme song for the movie Titanic, a huge hit to the masses.
At this time Elliott had been signed to Kill Rock Stars music label. He travelled to Los Angeles, which I believe he loved and wrote an excellent song called ‘Angeles’. I named my daughter Angeles because of Elliott Smith and once she gets older I will show her Elliott Smith and the song that inspired her name. There’s one perfect quote in this song: “…No one’s gonna fool around with us, so glad to meet you Angeles.” a brilliant song. Which is not surprising as Elliott dabbled in different kinds of instruments he would play and compile into masterpieces.
Depending on your mood, there is something for everyone, in my opinion. He openly talks about his Mother, his drug use and relationships with people… good and bad. He seemed to have it all. More fame, more music being recorded and re-writing former songs to add or remove certain lyrics that have been changed from some original songs he wrote. For example: there are 2 versions of Miss Misery and 2 versions of Waltz #2 xo. (My two personal favourites)! Which are tattooed on me! If you haven’t heard of Elliott or have only heard a song or two, I highly recommend to find more songs and you won’t be disappointed!

Elliott Smith- Needle In The Hay.
Johnny Depp publicly recognized Needle In The Hay as a great song and he would listen to it a lot while filming Secret Window. Johnny Depp described it a “somewhat creepy raw and honest” song. He quoted Elliott as a genius! Also, towards the end of filming Secret Window he would listen to Needle In The Hay before filming to better get himself into character.

Elliott Smith- King’s Crossing
Not all of Elliott’s song are just him with an acoustic guitar. He dabbled with many instruments. There is something special about this song, and I feel that like-minded individuals and intelligent people can truly understand the lyrics. Like yourself!

At the abrupt end of his life and in turn, his wonderful music he left us with 10+ albums to listen to whenever we want. Thank you Elliott Smith for giving your soul
through your powerful, timid, honest, humble and truly brilliant songs!
The cause of his death were 2 stab wounds to the chest, right in his heart. It was initially ruled a suicide, but later evidence showed that Elliott had defensive wounds on his hands and arms. It has been debated for years if Elliott really did stab himself, pull the knife out and do it again. At that time he was only with his girlfriend, Jennifer Chiba. She claimed she had nothing to do with his death. Her claims are that they got into a verbal fight and Elliott was threatening to hurt himself. She said she was “scared” so she went and locked herself in the bathroom. After she didn’t hear any yelling she left the bathroom only to see Elliott lying on the ground with a knife in his chest. This next part really upsets me, she then proceeded to pull the knife out which cause Elliott to bleed out and die before help arrived. Why would she do that? According to friends and people close to them around that time say that they were always fighting and Jennifer was the aggressor and Elliott did not like fighting. They used together, so it is unclear what provoked the fatal argument, but one thing is certain… We lost a really special person that day. Nobody has since come close to him as a musician. Like myself there remains skeptics about what really happened that fateful day- October 21st of 2004. This year (2021) would mark the 17th anniversary of his passing.
What do you think really happened to this musical mastermind? Do you think Elliott did it, or did his girlfriend have something to do with it? It seems unlikely that he would be able to puncture his own heart twice…
Will we ever find out? Did the investigators make a mistake? Did Jennifer Chiba get away with murder? She is the only one who will ever know the true story.
We Miss You Elliott <3 More Than Words Can Explain.
